Directions

Formal Assessment

Step 1 Practice the process using an envelope/bos with a collection of resources with the whole class as a group. Demonstrate to the students how to examine the contents of the envelope/box. Walk them through the process of looking closely and determining what the contribution the picture(s) represent.

Files

Step 2 Separate students into four groups. Identify each group as a different civilization. Hand each group an envelope/box from their civilization.

Files

Step 3 Have the students work in groups to examine the clues to determine their envelope/box's contribution. Ask the groups to determine the contribution, which civilization the contribution is from, and why it was important.

Files

Step 4 Ask one person in each group to tell the class about their contribution and explain why it was important.

Best Practices

Analysis of Student Learning

Most students had a great time trying to figure out the contributions. They found it fun and really brought home the fact that ancient civilizations have made contributions that we are still using in some form today.

Analysis of Best Instructional Practices (learn more)

Teaching for Understanding Teaching for Understanding(learn more)

Explicit Understanding Goal

During the introduction to the activity, the students understood what knowledge they were expected to demonstrate.

Check Misconceptions

Each student presented to class their envelope/box and discussed their results. Other students were given an opportunity to agree/disagree with their conclusions.

Learners Explain Thinking

Each student presented to class their envelope/box and discussed their results. Other students were given an opportunity to agree/disagree with their conclusions.

Reflections and Recommendations

This was a fun and interesting way for the students to review their knowledge. Additional uses for this learning experience would be 1)to use the envelopes/boxes for each civilization at the end of the unit and then all together for review before state testing and 2) give the students a worksheet numbered 1-31 with columns for contribution and civilization and have them pick an envelope/box to solve for morning work or when they complete their work early.
